Adoption
  1. At any one time there are over 1,400 children "Waiting" for permanent home in the State of South Carolina. The State has determined that the child cannot or should not return to the home of the biological parents.

  2. The State has determined that the child cannot be placed without an adoption subsidy because of a specific factor or conditions. The specific factors or conditions in South Carolina are:

    1. An African-American or Biracial child, six years old or older
    2. A member of an African-American or Bi-racial sibling group of two children being placed together, one of whom is at least six years old or a member of an African-American or Bi-racial sibling group of three or more children of any age
    3. A white child, ten years old or older
    4. A member of a white sibling group of three children being placed together, one of whom is at least six years old, or a member of a sibling group of four or more white children of any age
    5. A child with a physical, mental or emotional handicap
    6. A child at risk of a physical, mental or emotional handicap because of genetic or environmental conditions in background
    7. A member of a sibling group being placed together, one of whom is a special needs child

  3. Reasonable, but unsuccessful efforts have been made to place the child without subsidy except where it would be against the best interest of the child because of such factors as significant emotional ties with prospective adoptive parents while in their care as a foster child

Reid House African American Adoption Center is working to recruit and approve families such as yours to adopt these "waiting" children. The center also provides placement support groups for waiting families, information and referral services and post finalization services to recruited families. Other services available to families who adopt include respite care provided in-home or out-of-home as well as recreational activities for adopted children allowing time-out for families.

These children need and deserve a permanent family such as yours to love and care for them. Please consider adoption. Our children are waiting!

Foster Care
  1. Reid House is recruiting and pre-screening potential foster care families for Charleston County.
  2. The prospective family must be able to handle an addition to their family in terms of providing love and guidance, without creating a financial burden on the family.

  4. Each home must pass a Fire and Health/Sanitation inspection.
  5. A home study of the family will be completed by a licensing worker.
  6. Potential foster parents are required to attend twelve (12) hours of foster care training prior to licensing, and five additional years thereafter.
  7. Board payments are issued monthly according to the age of the child in the home:
    • Birth - 5 years $332.00
